Body Language

Body language is a form of non-verbal communication, where a person moves their body to relate how they are feeling. It is typically subconscious behavior, and sometimes we do not know we do it, however it is an important form of communication, where we can assess how someone is feeling, from afar possibly, without speaking. This is very important when it comes to animation, as without realizing, we can understand a non-living thing‘s feelings through realistic and familiar actions.

There are many signs of body language that can be found. Here are some examples:

  • ·      Crossing arms across the chest – Can mean person is defensive, arms are forming a barrier. It can mean that a person is thinking deeply about what is being discussed, but in a serious or challenging situation, it can mean that a person is expressing opposition.
  • ·      Waving. Either a greeting or saying goodbye.
  • ·      Consistent eye contact can signify that a person is thinking positively of what the other is saying. It can also mean that they do not trust the speaker enough, so do not take their eyes off the speaker.
  • ·      Distrust is often indicated by averted gaze, or by touching the ear or scratching the chin.
  •     Constant blinking, or the lack of blinking, may be a sign of lying.
